Brechin City v Alloa Athletic

3 - 2
Full Time

Reaction

Decisions just now do not appear to be going “The Wasps” way, as early at the first minute at Glebe Park against Brechin City, Jim Lister’s header looked to have crossed the line but nothing given, a minute later Rory McAllister scored a wonder goal and again the team were on the back foot. Brechin then scored a second goal and threatened to go further ahead, Alloa then came back into the game, Stuart Noble was then pulled back and on another day might have been rewarded with a penalty, Scott Walker then had a header come back off the post, then Jim Lister scored a goal to put us back in the game. Then just on half-time with “The Wasps” on top in the game they were denied what looked like a stonewall penalty, Billy Gibson being flattened in the box. In the second half Craig Nelson was to show his class with two great saves from Andy Scott & Michael McGowan. The home side won a late free kick and ex Wasp Neil Jancyzk curled home past a poor Alloa wall to clinch the points. In the final minute Alloa were finally rewarded a penalty which Michael McGowan scored which was scant reward for the effort on the evening.

ALLAN MAITLAND AFTER BRECHIN CITY DEFEAT

We came here with a game plan to have a go tonight, but Brechin City went ahead in the 2nd minute with a wonder goal from Rory McAllister, who is the best player in our league, there was not much we could do about that, but that set us back, confidence isn’t high and two minutes into the game you are a goal down and for the next fifteen minutes we really struggled and during that spell, Brechin score their 2nd goal a nice move but a simple goal and I was disappointed the way we defended it, thereafter we worked really hard to get back into the game and In my opinion we had a stonewall penalty claim when Stuart Noble was pulled down inside the box – the referee was not interested. We were then unfortunate when a Scott Walker header comes back of the post then Jim Lister scores a great goal and we are on top at this stage, then at a corner kick just before half-time an even clearer penalty when Billy Gibson is pulled to the ground and Scott Walker was also knocked over, not to get a penalty kick for that which is symptomatic of our season , not unlike not getting the penalty at Ayr recently, when Jim Lauchlan punched the ball clear, we are just not getting these decisions at the moment. In the second half Andy Scott had a chance and then Michael McGowan had a great effort which Craig Nelson saves, we were very much in the game. There was a mix up between Mark Brown and Jamie Ewings at one stage and Rory McAllister nearly scores but the goal we then lost was as cheap as can be, after giving away a free kick our wall was a shambles with one of their players creating a gap which they take advantage of and the ball creeps into the net. We still kept to our task, we worked at it and then were given a penalty kick near the end, an easy one to give, its in the last minute of the game but that could have been our third penalty of the evening. The spirit of the team was great again tonight but it would have taken three goals to have gained a point and that is indicative of how we have been this season and where we are in the league table.
