Northern Gas and Power – Net Zero Week

Northern Gas and Power are proud to be the Principal Sponsor of Net Zero Week!

It’s important that as businesses we reduce carbon emissions to reverse the effects of climate change before it’s too late.

To reach net zero carbon, we’ll need to adopt many new measures, from behavioural changes and new ways of working, to innovative technology solutions.

Net Zero Week (17-23 July) plans to raise national awareness and build much needed momentum towards a sustainable future.

NGP will promote a month-long period of Net Zero content, using their platform at Northern Gas and Power to voice opinions, share evidence, explore strategy and highlight solutions in the journey towards Net Zero.

They’ve lined up some exciting white papers, videos and podcasts from experienced experts. Hereโ€™s the Global Head of Energy Services, Dan Smith, sharing his passion on the importance of reaching net zero.

Also check out the latest news and announcements from Net Zero Week on the NGP socials and the dedicated Net Zero Week page on the NGP site: ๐Ÿ‘‡

David Murray

I am sad to announce the death of David Murray who for 25 years served the club with distinction, latterly as an Honorary Director.

Some of you will remember David as the Director responsible for hospitality bookings etc.ย  His commitment to that role ensured that the club enjoyed an excellent income stream over many years.

David rarely missed the fortnightly Board Meetings and attended all away fixtures.

His health deteriorated in the last few months and he passed away peacefully yesterday at home (15th June 2021).

Squad update ii

Barry Ferguson has been quick to add more quality to the squad with 6 new signings, as half the squad take part in the first of two pre-season fitness tests.

Sammon in black and gold

Conor’s a well known name in Scottish football having graced Rugby Park initially, later Tynecastle, Fir Park and finally the Falkirk Stadium.

Sammon forged a fearsome legacy at Wigan where he commanded a 7 figure transfer fee. After four years at Derby County he went on to short spells with Rotherham, Sheffield Utd and Ipswich before returning north of the border.

At the peak of his footballing prowess he represented Ireland under Giovanni Trappatoni, tasting defeat only against Spain and Austria in his 9 international appearances.

Take me to Church

Daniel’s a former Celtic youth who’s represented East Fife and Dumbarton in League 1 in previous years. The exciting wide man can play at full back or on the wing.

Mark Durnan is a Wasp

In his prime and with a wealth of experience under his belt at a higher level, the former QoS, Dundee Utd and Dunfermline centre half makes the step up from Falkirk.

Barry brings in Boyd

Just 24 and already with plenty Premiership pedigree under the belt former Hamilton forward Steven Boyd joins the Wasps, after a year and a half at Peterhead.

Armour up top

Also joining from Peterhead is 23 year old Ben Armour. Ben cut his teeth first at Morton before successive loan stints at Annan and Dumbarton. He’ll lead the line as Alloa’s number 9.

Mark Lamont in at the Indodrill

The former Partick Thistle youngster joins after a 4 year spell at Clyde where he was integral to the Cumbernauld clubs’ promotion and both of the last two Covid-19 disrupted campaigns.

We’re also pleased to welcome a new signing from Clyde, defender, Craig Howie. Howie made 34 appearances at the Bully Wee, scoring twice, after transferring from East Kilbride in 2019.

Also returning to the Wasps is goalkeeper Craig McDowall. He’s a well known quantity at the Indodrill having served stints under Paul Hartley, Barry Smith, Danny Lennon and Jim Goodwin. Craig has the distinction of being the only keeper in Alloa history to have beaten Rangers as he manned the box in the 3-2 win over Rangers in the Petrofac Cup semi-final back in December 2014.

Steven Hetherington and Liam Dick were offered new deals but have decided to pursue full-time offers.

Innes Cameron, Innes Murray and Lee Connelly return to their parent clubs on the expiry of their loan agreements.

The remaining players from last year’s squad are moving on at the end of their contracts. We thank them for their efforts at Alloa and wish them luck with their future careers.

Ferguson takes charge of the Wasps

We’re delighted to confirm Barry Ferguson MBE has been appointed as first team manager.

After almost three years at Kelty Hearts, with Lowland League titles and promotion to the SPFL secured with the Fife side, Barry makes the step up to lead our League 1 campaign.

The former midfielder had an illustrious playing career picking up 15 trophies with Rangers and also winning the English League Cup with Birmingham City.

It’s a club that you look over the years, the managers that have been here… they’ve always been good managers who’ve progressed in the game so once I met the chairman and saw the facilities, it’s the right club at the right time. My sole aim in the next year is to try and get straight back into the Championship. I’ve spoken to one or two [players]. I’ll get round all the boys in the next couple days. There’s a good core of players already signed up. If I can go add a good bit of quality to go and help those players… the players already signed up are players I rate very highly… Hopefully in the next week or two we’ll see players coming in.

Barry Ferguson

Barry’s experience in football you won’t better. His recent track record is as strong as his career… Critically, what attracted us is his enthusiasm and ambition. We’re an ambitious club. When you see someone and talk to someone who reflects the qualities of our club then you take that opportunity if it’s available. I think the Championship and League 1 are two difficult leagues, but financially, not only will we not be cutting our budget from last season, we’ll probably increase it… to ensure we can compete.

Mike Mulraney, Alloa Athletic FC Chairman

End of Season Award Results

Player of the Year

Alloa Athletic’s record breaking appearance holder bags the top honour with over 45% of the total votes. Kevin Cawley‘s 33 appearances this season saw him create the most goals of any player over the COVID-19 disrupted year. 5 strikes found the net while another 5 were set up by the Wasps’ talisman.

Kevin Cawley (blue) dominates the POTY voting.

Goal of the Season

Alan Trouten’s (blue) half way line effort paled in comparison to the Williamson’s rocket (yellow).

In another landslide contest, 18-year-old Lucas Williamson tied up the Goal of the Season award with his wonder strike into the top corner to give Alloa the lead against Ayr United. The strike somehow was beaten to the SPFL’s own goal of the month competition in March much to the dismay of anyone with eyes.

Young Player of the Year

In the only real battle for an award this year, just a 20 vote difference swung the competition in favour of Kilmarnock loanee Innes Cameron ahead of Williamson. The commanding striker looked more than his age of just 20 years as he battered the opposition and the back of the net 6 times in his 15 Alloa appearances looking like a seasoned professional on the way.

The two-horse race of Cameron (red) and Williamson (blue) swung wildly over the week of voting.

The End of Season Awards

Several players reached Alloa landmarks this season. Each received a commemorative plate from the club to mark the milestone. Kevin Cawley received a portrait after becoming the record appearance holder.

Scott Taggart and Steven Hetherington broke a double century, Neil Parry with 150, and Liam Buchanan made a ton of Alloa appearances.

We’re thankful for their long service in Alloa colours.
