First Team update

The club can announce that the following players are leaving after the expiry of their contracts:

David Hutton – A steady pair of hands for most of the season. David turned out 31 times before PJ Morrison claimed the number 1 jersey.

Alan Trouten – A popular figure at the Indodrill over the last few seasons, Alan endured another injury blighted season but leaves with an impressive strike rate of 42 goals in 107 appearances for the Wasps.

Lucas Williamson – The youngster failed to break into the first team this season and instead had loan spells at Broomhill FC and Berwick Rangers. A highlight of his Alloa career will remain the wonder goal scored against Ayr United in the 20/21 season.

Ben Armour – the striker made just a handful of appearances as he struggled with injury.

Jordan Armstrong – the defender made only 6 appearances in the end for the Wasps as playing time was a at a premium.

Mark Lamont – Mark managed just a handful of appearances for the Wasps before spending most of the season on loan at Broomhill FC.

Loan Players:

Euan Henderson, Mouhamed ‘Sena’ Niang, Ross MacIver, Blaise Riley-Snow and PJ Morrison all return to their parent clubs after the expiry of their loan agreements.

We’d like to thank the players for their time and effort at Alloa Athletic and best of luck in the next chapters of their careers.

Brian Rice signs extension to 2024

The manager put pen to paper on a new deal with the Wasps on Thursday evening.

Brian’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season but after the progress shown on the pitch and forging such a positive atmosphere in the short space of time he’s been here, it’s great to end any uncertainty as we move ahead in the summer.

Brian Rice on re-signing:

“I’ve spoke recently on how much I’ve loved the club, I’ve taken it to my heart. Everyone at the club has been fantastic from the staff, the players, the supporters right down to Joyce, the tea lady. It’s ‘all as one’ and that’s the way I like it. It’s been a tough week for me as my dad died but I’m delighted to get it done and the hard work starts now.”

Mike Mulraney, Alloa Athletic Chairman:

“I’m sure I speak for everyone at the club when I say we are delighted on the two year extension of Brian’s contract. Our desire to have an extended contract was to reflect the outstanding work that Brian has done to date and the fact that he’s instantly fit into the system we have at the Indodrill. I’m sure everyone at the club and all the fans will agree that Brian has been and will continue to be a great asset to Alloa Athletic. We look forward to the next two years under Brian’s leadership.

East Fife 0-3 Alloa

Highlights

Alloa converted 3 times in the second half to secure their most comfortable league win of the season.

The Wasps are unchanged from the 1-0 win over Peterhead and look to gain a rare back to back result against East Fife. The Fifers before the start of play were sitting just 3 points from Dumbarton after hauling themselves back into survival contention in recent weeks.

The first half was a timid affair with the Wasps often wasteful in attack. Sammon would have possibly the chance of the half early on but as he dragged the ball wide a vital foot knocked the ball away and the forward’s spinning effort was not threatening to Jude Smith’s goal.

East Fife’s focus on the first half was probably on the penalty shout that was very reminiscent of the award at the Indodrill where Durnan caught Connell with a forearm. Today, Durnan was luckier and despite jumping with an outstretched arm there was no penalty decision from the referee. Danny Swanson would have their only memorable effort of the half after deftly flicking the ball up and looping an effort into the side netting but Alloa goalkeeper PJ Morrison was happy to let it go after determining early it was off target.

Alloa’s other golden opportunity of the half fell after a corner from Scougall landed nicely for Howie. The centre half come left back managed to scoop the ball up awkwardly and his second touch finish was struck at an awkward height contributing to blazing the ball into the car park from 8 yards.

The second half did finally bring the breakthrough as Kevin Cawley struck home after a determined cross from Boyd found him in the box. It was a simple route one ball aimed for MacIver – he headed to Henderson who held the ball up and rolled it to the byline for Boyd to slide back for Cawley’s 71st Alloa goal.

Scougall struck another blow for East Fife as he won a penalty after driving through the East Fife box to draw a foul. Moving like a crisp packet in the wind Scougall danced around 3 East Fife defenders before being tripped. Stepping up to the responsibility himself, he drilled the penalty low into the corner past Smith.

East Fife had another big penalty shout denied after this and to be fair, Boyd looked to have tripped Denholm inside the box but this was immaterial to the result as Alloa continued to threaten a third.

It would soon arrive with a massive slice of luck. Henderson driving into the increasingly stretched East Fife defence smashed a shot toward goal, glancing it off the back off Steven Boyd and with the deflection, Jude Smith had no chance to get near the effort.

Alloa have now just a single defeat in their last six with momentum building to the end of the season.
