Squad Update

It’s always an exciting and also a sad time of year with players coming and going at the end of the season and this season is no different.

We can confirm that Mark Durnan, Scott Gallacher, Wullie Muir, Craig Howie and Jon Robertson will all leave on the expiry of their Alloa Athletic contracts.

Jon Robertson fits into the concise definition of an Alloa legend. The natural midfielder made 254 appearances while at the Indodrill Stadium after joining in Jack Ross’ 2016-17 rebuild. Some fantastic memories were forged as the team went on a record unbeaten run and finished second in the League. While next season, Alloa made a late push to finish third they would go one better with playoff victory. Jon continued to be an Alloa stalwart and showed his versatility as the Wasps survived in the Championship for another two years before dropping out at the end of 2021. Even in the two most recent seasons in League 1 he’s been a vital anchor in the team as Alloa just missed out in playoffs and then made this year’s edition. We’d like to thank Jon for a wonderful seven seasons and hope to see him around as long as it’s not on the beat!

Mark Durnan, signed at the beginning of Barry Ferguson’s tenure and went on to become club captain. He made 53 Alloa appearances in total scoring four goals but injuries and job training curtailed his playing time this year. Mark subsequently has been announced as signing for League 2 side Dumbarton.

Craig Howie, signed from Clyde in the summer of 2021 making 27 appearances and scoring one goal in his first season. This season he made just 7 appearances before he emigrated to Australia earlier in the season. Best of luck down under.

Scott Gallacher had no luck as he came in to provide cover earlier in the year. He unfortunately fractured an elbow while warming up at Airdrie and suffered setbacks in his recovery but we wish him all the best as he moves on this summer.

Wullie Muir had left the club earlier in the season but came back to provide experienced cover at the tail end of the season if called upon. We’d like to record our thanks for the short notice return and wish him and his young family all the best for the future.

Thanks to all our loan players for their contribution to our season.

The following have accepted new contract offers:

While striker Ross MacIver has moved to full-time football with Falkirk announcing him as an early summer signing.

Defender George Stanger also returns to full time football after agreeing a contract with Ayr United.

Brian Rice has not been idle in signing up new players this season though. Stay tuned as we await the opportunity to welcome six more Wasps once we can submit their registrations to the SFA.
