Wasps face Loco's in Scottish Cup

    Friday, November 01, 2013 5:39:54 PM

Alloa Athletic will enter this season's William Hill Scottish Cup tomorrow when they face Highland League side Inverurie Loco Works in the Third Round of the competition.

Background on Alloa’s Scottish Cup 3rd Round opponents
Inverurie lies just north of Aberdeen. It is a town of reasonable size (population 11,000) and worth a pit stop if you’re ever in that vicinity (there’s a lovely fish and chip shop in the main street) Like Aberdeen, the club was founded in 1903, by workmen from the Great North of Scotland Railway, whose carriage and locomotive wagon workshops were based in Inverurie. This is obviously where the name of the club derives from. These workshops were eventually closed in 1970. The Locos play at Harlaw Park in the town.

The team play in red and black vertical stripes and black shorts (Milan style)- although this may potentially lead to a colour clash at The Recs and the Locos reverting to their white away kit as a result.

The club joined the Highland League in 2001 after previously being a successful junior team. Since that year they have won the Highland League Cup on 2 occasions (07/08 and 08/09) and the Aberdeenshire Shield once. They have also finished as runners up in the Highland League 3 times and regularly compete in the top half of the table, although last season finished a fairly disappointing 10th.

    Current Team and Form
The club have co-managers, Kenny Coull and Scott Buchan. Appointing co managers was adopted by some senior teams in the late 80s/early 90s (Aberdeen and Liverpool spring to mind) but is now fairly rare. In addition, both managers are also registered as players, although neither play that regularly now. They currently lie 5th in the Highland League with a decent return of 19 points from 9 games. They have only experienced 2 losses so far, to Nairn and Buckie Thistle. A fortnight ago the Locos lost the Aberdeenshire Cup Final to Formartine 3-2 after being 2-0 ahead in a game the conditions played a big part, Steve Paterson’s side had the advantage of a strong wind in the 2nd half and finally scored their winning goal deep into injury time. However the Locos bounced back last week end defeating Lossiemouth 4-1, taking their total to 26 league goals scored in 9 matches this season, highlighting the treat they bring to Recreation Park.
    Scottish Cup Record
The Locos are regular participants in the Scottish Cup, Inverurie Locos this season are looking to reach the Fourth Round of the William Hill Scottish Cup for the third time in six seasons after a few memorable runs in the competition. Last season Locos took Arbroath to a replay after an exciting 3-3 draw at Harlaw Park. In 2009/10 they defeated Stranraer en route to 4th Round of the competition before losing 4-0 to Ross County. They also reached the 4th Round in the previous season, where they were given a home tie against SPL club Motherwell. After numerous postponements they lost the tie 3-0. More closer to home, they lost 1-0 to Stirling Albion at Forthbank in 2005 to a late last minute Chris Hay goal. Their previous form in the Scottish Cup suggests they shouldn’t be underestimated in the first ever meeting between the Alloa Athletic and the Locos.
