Alloa Athletic player/manager Paul Hartley was delighted on Saturday when his new look Alloa side won the Keyline Challenge Cup at Mossfield Stadium, Oban. The Wasps played five games, winning four and drawing the other without conceding a goal throughout the tournament. The Wasps 1st game was against the defending champions Dundee United, Alloa won 1-0 with captain Darren Young scoring the winning goal, Dundee United did have a chance to equalise but star striker David Goodwillie missed from the spot. The 2nd game against Hamilton Accies ended 0-0, the 3rd game against St. Johnstone saw The Wasps win 3-0 with goals from Darren Young, Kevin Cawley and a trialist, the 4th game ended 1-0 against Hearts with another of the trialists scoring a wonderful goal. In the final game against the hosts Oban Saints, Alloa won 2-0 with goals from Kevin Cawley & Ryan McCord. Ryan McCord was also presented with the Player of the Tournament award. This is Alloa’s third victory in the Oban Tournament, who now share that honour along with Dundee United & Clyde. Manager Paul Hartley again saw this as another great chance to play another eight trialists and has now signed defender Michael Doyle who played as right back and central defender in the tournament and earlier against Falkirk in first pre season game. Michael joined Kilmarnock at the start of last season after been on Celtic’s books as a youth and later went on loan to Stirling Albion from January, 2011 – May, 2011. Tomorrow evening Tuesday 12th July, Alloa Athletic will face Airdrie United at Recreation Park in another pre season friendly, kick-off 7.30pm, later in the week manager Paul Hartley has fixed up another two pre season games but both will be closed door games. On Thursday 14th July, The Wasps will face Queen of the South and then on Saturday they will face Dumbarton, however fans are reminded these will be Closed Door friendlies.
