    John Muir

    04 March 2018 16:32:31

Alloa Athletic FC were saddened to hear of the death of one of their ex players last week, when John Muir, who had two spells at the club, passed away aged 70. John Muir originally signed for “The Wasps” from Blairhall Colliery by manager Archie “Curly” McPherson on 4th March, 1968. John’s goal scoring for the club had clubs take notice and Willie Ormond signed John for St. Johnstone on a full-time contract for £ 10,000 transfer fee on 6th December, 1969. John later returned for a second spell with “The Wasps” on 5th June, 1976 when signed by Hugh Wilson, indeed he was part of Hugh Wilson’s Alloa Athletic side in Season 1976/77 which won promotion for the first time since 1938/39. In total John Muir made 144 first team starts plus 11 from the bench scoring 57 goals for “The Wasps”, John Muir went into pub management after retiring from football, initially locally at the Devonpark Inn  in Coalsnaughton before he had a spell at The Spaniards Inn, Hampstead before moving to The Kingswood Arms in Surrey from approximately 1985, and he worked there for 20 years.. He eventually retired from this business as his legs could no longer stand the strain of being on his feet all day – a legacy of the injuries that forced him to retire from football I understand. He continued to frequent the pub right up until Christmas, and was always popular with all his former customers. His funeral will be held on Wednesday 28th March in Leatherhead, Surrey. Our condolences go to his partner Janice James, his ex wife Emma and his 3 children Jonathon, Emily Charlotte & Cameron John.
